How Each One Seals

A roll-top seals mechanically. The opening is folded down over itself three to five times and buckled, and the compressed layers form the barrier. There is no hardware in the sealing path at all — the material seals against itself.

A waterproof zipper seals through a compressed gasket running along the slider track, creating an airtight closure when fully engaged. The seal is continuous and doesn't depend on the user rolling correctly — but it does depend on the track being clean and the slider fully docked.

The Distinction That Resolves the Argument

Roll-top advocates and zipper advocates are both correct, on different axes:

• On sealing performance under sustained pressure, the zipper wins. A properly engineered waterproof zipper is airtight and blocks capillary moisture even during extended submersion — the kind of pinned-underwater scenario a whitewater paddler can face. Most roll-tops are designed for splash, rain, and temporary immersion rather than prolonged depth.
• On reliability across a fleet and a season, the roll-top wins. There is nothing in the sealing path to jam, warp, or wear out; it needs no maintenance; and if a buckle breaks it can be replaced. That's why roll-top remains the default across the category.

So the honest brief is: specify a zipper when the requirement is genuine, prolonged submersion; specify a roll-top when the requirement is dependable everyday waterproofing at scale. For most kayaking, camping, beach, and travel use, the roll-top is the better product — cheaper, lighter, and harder to break — which is why our standard dry bag range is built that way. The Environment Should Decide It

One factor outweighs preference: where the bag will be used. If the product is aimed at fine desert sand, river mud, or heavy beach salt spray, specify a roll-top. Grit is the enemy of a sealed zipper track, and the failure mechanism is specific — forcing a slider that's dry or choked with debris warps the terminal landing bracket, creating micro air gaps that then siphon moisture in when the bag is submerged. Once that damage is done it doesn't reverse.

If a zipper is the right call for the product, the care regime has to be part of the package: silicone lubricant applied along the sealing tracks periodically, and grains cleared from the track with a soft brush after any shore or beach work. That belongs on the care card, not left for the customer to discover.

Why the Roll-Top Has Advantages a Zipper Can't Copy

• Adjustable capacity — rolling more or fewer times flexes the volume, and the top can be left partly open for oversized loads.
• Air purging — excess air can be squeezed out before sealing, which keeps a bag pliable and easy to wedge into a kayak hatch. A zipped bag holds whatever air is inside it.
• Field repairability — buckles are replaceable; sealed zippers generally aren't.
• Cost at volume — no expensive hardware, which is what makes promotional and entry lines viable.
• No maintenance burden — nothing to lubricate over the product's life.

The Hybrid: What Most Good Products Actually Do

The strongest designs often don't choose. A roll-top main compartment provides the dependable primary seal, while a waterproof or splash-proof zip pocket gives fast access to small items — phone, keys, snacks — without unrolling the whole bag. That combination answers the roll-top's only real weakness, which is access.

Two engineering cautions if you go hybrid. First, be honest in the listing about what each compartment is rated for: a front zip pocket is typically splash-proof, so if the bag capsizes, items in that pocket may get wet. Stating that prevents the review that says the bag leaked when in fact the main compartment stayed dry. Second, every transition between a welded panel, a zipper, a pocket and a strap is a potential weak point, so hybrids need careful engineering and testing rather than simply adding features. Note how several of these answer the access problem without abandoning the roll-top: a transparent window to identify contents, a phone window pocket, a separately rated zip pocket, and a gas valve that lets air be adjusted without unrolling. Hardware and pocket configuration are specifiable per order, and where a programme requires an airtight zipper as the main closure, that is developed as a custom build rather than taken from stock.

Quality Control for Either Closure

Whichever system a project uses, quality is gated in three tiers — IQC (incoming tarpaulin, zippers, buckles and webbing against the signed standard, with colour difference and fastness), IPQC (cutting tolerance, weld integrity, stiffener bar alignment on roll-tops and zipper installation on zipped builds, with peel tests on sample welds at each run start), and OQC (AQL sampling, batch immersion testing, and gold-sample comparison, with SGS or QIMA available). Custom zipped builds get additional attention on slider operation and gasket seating; roll-tops on weld integrity at the folded corners and top-edge reinforcement. Sealock also strictly executes the complete customer inspection procedure on finished goods: unboxing, vacuum extraction, a 24-hour static rest, and air-leak determination — which tests the closure as built rather than as designed. The lab additionally runs weld bond and peel strength, closure cycling, a 1,500+ cycle load test with jerk-loading on strap anchors and buckles, abrasion, tear, tensile, salt spray, UV, colour fastness and colour difference.

Q: Which closure is more waterproof?
A: A quality waterproof zipper seals better under sustained submersion — it's airtight and blocks capillary moisture. A roll-top gives strong protection against rain, splash and temporary immersion. For most outdoor use the roll-top is sufficient; for prolonged depth, specify the zipper.

Q: Then why is roll-top still the standard?
